Reset vs reboot

Reset or Reboot? What Your Nervous System Actually Needs

“Reset” and “reboot” are powerful metaphors. Neither should be mistaken for literal neurobiology. The useful idea is restoring adaptive range, not wiping the system clean.

“Reset” and “reboot” are powerful metaphors. Neither should be mistaken for literal neurobiology. The useful idea is restoring adaptive range, not wiping the system clean.

Should we call it a nervous-system reset or a nervous-system reboot?

From a marketing perspective, reboot sounds stronger. From a biological perspective, both are metaphors.

Your biology is not software

A computer reboot stops processes and reloads the operating system. Your nervous system does not do that. Even during sleep, regulation continues.

So the question is not which word sounds more powerful. It is which idea helps people understand what they are trying to accomplish.

I prefer Reset

Reset suggests a change in state without implying that the entire system was shut down and restarted. It leaves room for something more realistic: an intervention can alter breathing, heart rate, attention, muscle tension or other components of current physiological state.

Reboot can still be useful conversationally, particularly when people describe feeling “stuck.” But I would not make it our scientific claim.

The objective is not to restart the nervous system. It is to help restore its ability to move.

The test is responsiveness

If a simple intervention produces a measurable change, that response itself may be informative. If it does not, that is information too.

This is why NeuraGrip focuses on transitions: Vigilance, Bracing and Repair are not intended as fixed personality types. They are a language for thinking about state and the ability to shift.

Keep the metaphor in its place

I am comfortable saying “Reset” because people understand it quickly. But we should always be able to translate the metaphor back into physiology.

Complex made simple should never become complex made false.
