Longevity Without Independence Is the Wrong Target

The most meaningful longevity target is not simply additional years, but additional years with function, autonomy, participation and choice.

The longevity industry is fascinated by time. Biological age. Epigenetic age. Life expectancy. Maximum lifespan. But I think we need a harder question.

What exactly are the extra years for?

Years are only valuable if life remains inhabitable

Most people do not dream of living longer simply to accumulate birthdays. They want more mornings in which they can get up, think clearly, move independently, engage with people they care about and decide what happens next.

That is why functional independence belongs near the centre of the longevity conversation.

The scientific language varies — functional capacity, functional ability, activities of daily living, intrinsic capacity — but the underlying idea is intuitive. Can the person still do what their life requires?

A longer life with a rapidly shrinking world is not the outcome most people mean when they say they want longevity.

We measure proxies because they are measurable

Blood tests are convenient. Scans are impressive. Wearable dashboards are addictive. These tools can reveal risk and change. But they remain proxies for what ultimately matters.

A longevity program should therefore ask questions that are almost embarrassingly practical.

Are you maintaining strength? Balance? Mobility? Cognition? Social participation? Vision and hearing? The ability to manage daily activities? The ability to recover after disruption?

Independence is not purely physical

It also depends on confidence, cognition, environment, social support, finances, accessibility and technology. A person can have physical capacity and still lose participation because the world around them becomes harder to navigate.

This is why healthy ageing research increasingly uses multidimensional frameworks.

The correct target is more life inside the years

That does not mean we abandon disease prevention. Quite the opposite. We control blood pressure, metabolic risk and other modifiable factors because disease can take capability away.

But the hierarchy matters.

The blood pressure number is not the final destination. The destination is the person who still gets to choose where they go.
